The 2016 breast cancer awareness season is upon us and I am here to update you on all the good Komen San Diego is doing!
Since 1995, the San Diego County Affiliate of Susan G. Komen is the trusted, local organization for accurate information and free services for all aspects of breast cancer. Komen San Diego funds partnerships throughout San Diego County to ensure all women, despite geographic, cultural and financial barriers, have access to breast health services. Komen-funded research has laid the groundwork for many promising treatments – tamoxifen, arimidex, and herceptin – as well as the discovery of the gene indicators BRCA1 and BRCA2 for inherited forms of breast cancer. EVERY MAJOR ADVANCE IN THE FIGHT AGAINST BREAST CANCER HAS BEEN TOUCHED BY SUSAN G. KOMEN RESEARCH.
As all of you know by now, I started working with Susan G. Komen back in 2004 as a way of honoring my mother and the horrific battles she faced in her lifetime- the debilitating chemo and radiation treatments, followed by heart and kidney/liver malfunctions caused by the treatments. I have no doubt that if Komen had been around when my mother was told she had breast cancer, she would still be here today. Not only would she have had more treatment options and better screening, but she would have had access to Susan G. Komen-funded programs that would have made her daily life living with chemo so much easier on her and our family.
I myself have seen the good that has come from this organization in my short 42 year lifespan. Thanks to Komen's activism work, the lump found in my breast in 2005 at the young age of 31 has been markered and monitored every year, despite constant insurance denials of not meeting the 2 family member history requirement for coverage.
Our success is made possible through the generous donations of community leaders like you. Whatever you can afford to give, please donate! EVERY PENNY COUNTS! As long you keep donating, I will keep walking and helping to ensure our survivor numbers keep rising!
