This year, the Race is more meaningful to me than ever before.
On June 2, 2016, my sister Gigi lost her three and a half year battle with ovarian cancer - a cancer related to the BRCA1 genetic mutation. Help me honor her memory by joining the Race and walking with me!
As you may know, I've been involved with the Komen Race for the Cure for several years now. I have the BRCA1 genetic mutation - now made famous by Angelina Jolie. I'm grateful for her telling her story, because it makes it so much easier to explain mine! :-)
I have benefited profoundly by knowing about the gene. I've been able to take steps to dramatically cut my risk of breast and ovarian cancer. I figure there will be dozens or hundreds of cancer genes identified eventually. I feel so incredibly lucky to have the one that is so well researched and studied, which gives me a wealth of informaiton to use in making proactive health care decisions. Much of the research that has been done to find and study the gene were funded by Komen. In very literal terms, Komen may well have saved my life.
You can personally be a part of the Cure! Please consider supporting this critically important organization by becoming a member of my team. Becoming a team member is easy! All you need to do is click "Register Now" (Button to the right). Then "Join a Team". Search for my name or "Safeco Strides for the Cure". We'll have a team tent complete with snacks and lots of team spirit on the morning of the Race, November 2nd.
Remember, each person can make a huge difference in the fight against breast cancer. Susan G. Komen for the Cure was founded by one sister making a promise to another sister. My sister Gigi can't be there with me this year. I hope you will be.
I look forward to seeing you on race day!
