Hello friends and family!
Here I go again...it's time for the Komen San Diego Race for the Cure! Please join me by registering or consider making a tax-deductible donation in support of my fundraising efforts. And to those of you who have continually supported me in my involvement with Komen in honor of my mom over the years--I wish I had the words to express my heartfelt gratitude to you, but words fail me and 'thank you' will have to suffice.
Your support helps us get one step closer to a world without breast cancer. I've been in a unique situation and privileged to see all our generous donors' contirbutions in action: 75 percent of all money raised through the Race stays in San Diego County to fund local breast cancer education, screening and support programs, all of which I oversee as the Komen San Diego Affiliate's Director of Grants and Public Policy. Last year, thanks to all the generous support of donors like you, together, we were able to provide:
- Breast health education to over 26,000 individuals;
- Nearly 12,000 free mammograms;
- Over 1,600 free diagnostic services
- Nearly $100,000 in financial assitance to breast cancer patients to help with costs for treatments and other living costs while undergoing life-saving treatments and;
- Over 13,000 meals to breast cancer patients and their families;
- And much more! (For a full list of services provided in our 2016-17 Grant Cycle, please click here.
The remaining 25 percent supports groundbreaking breast cancer research. Outside the US government, Komen is the largest funder of breast cancer research-and that's huge! Not only has every major advance in breast cancer research and treatment been touched by a Komen grant, but I have personally benefitted from this aspect of Komen's work.
After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003 and enduring three failed chemo treatments, my mom's doctors deemed her untreatable and told us that she had less than a year to live. Hearing that I would lose my mom before graduating high school is a feeling I still cannot explain to this day. By God's grace though, that didn't happen. My mom was able to participate in a drug trial funded by Komen and because of that drug, I had another six years with her. I have six years worth of memories and moments with my amazing mom that I wouldn't have had if Komen had not stepped in.
I want to give all the sons and daughters out there more memories with their moms. Will you please join me in this fight?
